Fibre Installation Process Explained

What to expect when the technicians arrive. A guide to the physical installation of fibre in your home.

Fibre Installation Process: From Trench to Tablet

Executive Summary

The day your fibre is installed is the day your digital life changes, but it can be a messy and confusing process if you aren't prepared. In South Africa, the installation is usually a two-part process involving the Fibre Network Operator (FNO) and your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This guide explains exactly what happens when the technicians arrive and how to ensure a clean, professional setup.

The Two Stages of Installation

Stage 1: The "Civil" Work (The FNO)

The FNO (e.g., Vumatel, Openserve) is responsible for bringing the cable from the street to your house.

  • Trenching: They may need to dig a small trench in your garden or lift a few paving stones.
  • Mounting the Box: They will mount a small plastic box (the Termination Point) on your outside wall.
  • The ONT: They will drill a hole through the wall to bring the fibre inside and connect it to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal).

Stage 2: The "Activation" (The ISP)

Once the ONT is installed and showing a green "Link" light, your ISP (e.g., Webafrica, Vox) takes over.

  • The Router: They will send you a router (or you use your own) to plug into the ONT.
  • Configuration: You (or a technician) will enter your account details into the router to "handshake" with the ISP's servers.

Where Should the ONT Go?

This is the most important decision you'll make. The ONT is the "source" of your internet.

  • Central Location: Ideally, put it in the middle of the house for best Wi-Fi.
  • Near Power: It needs a dedicated plug point (and ideally a UPS).
  • Safe from Damage: Don't put it where kids or pets can pull the fragile fibre cable.

Practical Checklist: Preparing for the Techs

  • Clear the Path: Ensure the technicians can access your boundary wall and the room where you want the ONT.
  • Check for Pipes: If you know where your water or gas pipes are, tell the diggers!
  • Have a Power Strip Ready: You'll need at least two plugs (ONT + Router).
  • Test Before They Leave: Don't let them go until you've seen a green light on the ONT and successfully connected a device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fibre installation make a mess?

It can. There will be some drilling and potentially some digging in your garden. A good team will tidy up and replace any paving stones they lift.

Can I install fibre myself?

No. The fibre optic cable requires specialized tools to 'splice' (connect). Only a certified FNO technician can do the physical install.

What is the 'Connection Fee'?

This is a fee charged by the ISP to activate your account on the FNO's network. It's separate from the physical installation fee.
