Fibre in South Africa is built by fibre network operators (FNOs). They dig the trenches or hang the cables, and ISPs then sell packages on their networks. These are the main operators and where they are most active:
Largest residential network in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, plus Vuma Reach in more affordable suburbs.
Telkom's wholesale network with the widest national footprint, including many smaller towns.
Strong in Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, and active in many regional towns.
Concentrated in Gauteng estates, complexes and high-density suburbs, with growing coverage elsewhere.

Fibre coverage FAQs
Who is installing fibre in my area?
In South Africa, fibre is installed by fibre network operators (FNOs) such as Vumatel, Openserve, Frogfoot, Octotel and MetroFibre. You will often see their branding on trenching boards or contractor vehicles. Once the network is live, you order through an ISP, which sells packages on that network.
Is there a single fibre coverage map for South Africa?
No. Each network operator publishes its own map, and ISPs combine several of them. Our map gives a national overview, and the address checker shows which providers are likely to serve your street.
How accurate are fibre coverage maps?
Maps are a good guide, but coverage can change from one house to the next, especially in estates and apartment blocks. Always confirm your exact address with the provider before ordering.
Fibre is being installed on my street. How do I sign up?
Check your address with an ISP that sells on the network being built. Many let you pre-register so you are connected as soon as the network goes live.
